NEIGHBORHOOD HISTORY

The Rose Garden’s story began in the late 19th century when the area was primarily agricultural.

  • Orchard Origins: Much of the land was owned by the Food Machinery Corporation (FMC) and was filled with pear and prune trees until the City of San Jose purchased an 11-acre tract in 1927.
  • Residential Boom: In 1937, John Crummey, chairman of FMC, subdivided his pear orchard into residential lots, establishing the core of what is now known as Rose Park.
  • Architectural Heritage: The neighborhood is celebrated for its diverse housing styles from the 1920s and 30s, featuring Victorian, Tudor, and Spanish Colonial designs alongside 1940s bungalows.
